Pilot Training

Personalised Beginner pilot training

fly chamonix 25.6.09 071

One on one instruction comprising six tandem flights, ground handling, theory lectures and two supervised solo flights.

The course is completely personalised to your requirements and usually takes three – four days.

The use of the tandem paraglider allows the instructor to make clearly demonstrate the different aspects of flight and allows the student to learn in a rapid & thorough manner without the stresses associated with a solo flight.

Having spent time actually flying the tandem wing, students progress rapidly with the all important ground handling, having already instinctively developed a good feeling for glider control from the tandem flights.

One on one theory lectures allow students to feel at ease and to ask any questions that they may have making for a better understanding. There is no such thing as a stupid question when it comes to learning to fly but we may feel stupid asking one in front of a group of students!

The supervised solo flights are undertaken at local “big” sites either in Chamonix or surrounds depending upon aerological conditions. Compared with regular group lessons where the student may have made a just few short flights several metres off the ground before undertaking his first big flight the student coming from the personalised course will feel far more reassured , having already made six similar flights with the tandem wing. The instructors at take off and at the landing field also feel more reassured as they know that the student has benefited from a more thorough preparation for the first solo flight !

The course, like the regular five day group lessons, is the starting point of your paragliding career. To become autonomous most students require between twenty to thirty supervised flights or another week long course before they will be ready to fly unsupervised in suitable conditions. These subsequent flights are best undertaken with small groups of other similar ability pilots.  Costs are approximately 450 € / 10 flights or ax 50 € / flight (including two instructors, all flying equiment, radios etc but excluding lift tickets & insurance).

In France, the sole legal requirements to fly are that you are suitably insured, use a site that has been authorized by the landowners and local mayor and that you wear a helmet! Thankfully, most pilots voluntarily undertake training. Other countries are more demanding and will expect a pilot to either undergo further training or at the very least to satisfy an instructor of their airmanship and general competence. Fly Chamonix will provide you with a report, in English, of your training and will be happy to recommend further training establishments in other countries. Certain countries have specific conditions and require techniques such as reverse launch, soaring flight, slope & top landing ,that are not usually taught in French beginner courses, it is essential that you undertake some further training before flying in these countries.

1000 € for up to four days. (250 € / subsequent day).

Lift tickets & flying insurance not included.
